MUSH represents the process of an unconscious act of self-recreation in the wake of extreme change - that disconnected feeling of not knowing. That once established hierarchy that governed present and future plans of my life collapses into an opaque pool of episodic introspection. To some degree, everyone experiences forms of MUSH - good and bad.
As my most recent series MUSH radically shifts the previously prevalent elements of my geometrically rigid abstracted cityscapes. Tight knit squares transform into rickety globs of unstable balconies and shuttered windows. Opened windows present new opportunities and gazes of the journey inward. Having my life planned out - the realization of the beginning middle and end comprised into a single design - only to watch those once thought eternal moments evaporate from this melted puddle of life. But reconstruction follows destruction with the promise of fruitful evolution.
I must mush forward and through with the brush! It shows that one never really knows what will happen tomorrow and one must be grateful for what they have when they have it - live the moment - love the moment.

I am fascinated by the unification of realism and abstraction. My work incorporates geometric grids to provide perspective underneath an impressionistic abstraction. “Quasi-impressionism” is a term I use to describe my work; relating more to Jean-Paul Riopelle as opposed to Philip Guston. The Abstract Impressionists of the mid-twentieth century painted abstractly with representational imagery to convey emotion. I start with the realistic, work through my painting process, to end up with a partial abstraction of my original representational image. Through different layers I control the extent of this style, blurring reality to the extreme and back again. Subjective generalizations of shape and color are employed to trigger cognitive recognition of the painting’s theme. My goal is to emotionally connect with the observer. I use the impressionistic techniques to angularly abstract images that induce imagination and instill emotion.
"Reality strangles the creative mind.
I want my work to touch the viewer,
Remind him of his past, a feeling, an
Event. I want it to stir the imagination."
My physical technique finds inspiration from the neo-expressionists, impressionists, and analytical cubists such as Kiefer, Mondrian, Johns and Picasso. I continue to explore many different subjects in my work: The chaos that is traffic at night in Manhattan; the time warp sensation of the streets in Rome; that inherent calming quality of natural beauty like palm tree lined beaches in California or cypress laden swamps in Louisiana. With each painting, I begin with the realistic image on canvas and then experiment, using impressionistic layers to obscure the detail and enhance what I believe to be the essence.
Ideas and emotions defy simplistic representation. How can a painting
trigger “getting the political tragedy that was Katrina” or
emote “the under appreciated serenity of the swamp”? This
is where I believe abstraction is so important; often the detail of the
“tree” needs to be obscured so that we can feel the essence
of the “forest.” This is what I want to achieve in my painting.
Alexander Harvie studied under Kelli Scott Kelley and Denyce Celentano
at Louisiana State University receiving his bachelors in fine art in 2005.
His work has been shown in Forum 35 Art Melt and was acclaimed recently
in City Social Magazine. He exhibits in several venues and galleries in
the southern United States. Numerous private collectors throughout America
have acquired his work. Alexander Harvie walks the fine line between realism
and abstraction. He thrives to evoke feelings and imagination using a
unique combination of texture, light, perspective, depth and stroke which
sets his work completely apart in a trademark style that is Harvie and
Harvie alone.
